Limassol guide: the castle, Molos, Kourion and getting around

Limassol is the working city of Cyprus — a port, a business district and a 20-km seafront, with two ancient cities at either end of it. It sits almost exactly between the two airports: 70 km from Larnaca, 65 km from Paphos, from €70 either way. That makes it the easiest base on the island and the hardest to sum up in one sentence.

"From €70" because Limassol is priced by area — the city runs 20 km along the coast and the ends are genuinely different destinations. Coming from Larnaca: €70 to the Germasogeia and Amathus side, €75 to the centre, €80 to the western suburbs. Going the other way, a Paphos Airport to Limassol transfer mirrors it exactly: €70 west, €75 centre, €85 east. Enter the street and the fare resolves itself — Larnaca Airport → Limassol or Paphos Airport → Limassol.

The old town and the castle

The medieval castle sits in the middle of the old town, a compact block of stone with a Cyprus Medieval Museum inside and a roof terrace worth the climb. Tradition links it to the wedding of Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria of Navarre in 1191, though what stands today is largely a later rebuild on those earlier foundations.

Around it is the part of Limassol worth walking: the old carob warehouses turned into restaurants, the covered market, narrow streets that survived the city's growth. An hour, unhurried.

Molos and the seafront

The Molos is the sculpture park and promenade running along the water from the old port. It is where the city actually goes in the evening — a wide paved strip with shallow pools, palms and a set of large sculptures, and it runs for a couple of kilometres.

Go at sunset. It is free, flat, pushchair-friendly, and it is the single best way to understand what Limassol is like as a city rather than a resort.

At the western end sits Limassol Marina with its restaurants and berths; further west again the cruise port, which is where you will be if you are arriving on a ship. Note for cruise passengers: the port is on the western side, so the €70 tier is usually the one that applies.

Kourion

Fifteen kilometres west of the city, on a cliff above the sea, is the best archaeological site on this coast.

The Greco-Roman theatre is the picture everyone knows — restored, still used for performances, and positioned so that the sea fills the whole view behind the stage. Around it are the House of Eustolios with its mosaic floors, the basilica, the baths. Allow ninety minutes, take water, and avoid the middle of a summer day: there is no shade at all.

It sits directly on the road between Limassol and Paphos, which makes it a natural twenty-minute stop on that drive. Tell the driver at booking — a short stop is not charged separately.

Amathus

At the opposite, eastern end of the city, the ruins of Amathus sit right beside the hotel strip — one of the island's ancient kingdoms, with an agora, baths and a temple terrace up the hill.

It is smaller and quieter than Kourion and takes half an hour. What makes it worth it is the position: you can walk to it from a beach hotel, which is not true of any other ancient city here.

The wine villages

Behind Limassol the ground rises into the foothills of the Troodos, and this is where Cypriot wine comes from. Omodos is the best known of the villages — cobbled square, monastery, wineries you can walk between. Others worth the drive: Vouni, Lofou, Koilani.

It is a half-day trip and it is one place where a car with a driver genuinely pays: the roads are narrow and winding, the point of the day is tasting wine, and public transport barely serves the villages at all. Limassol to Troodos is €40 for a sedan.

Getting around

The seafront is walkable and the local bus network follows the coast well — it is one of the better urban networks on the island. Away from the coast it thins out fast.

Parking in the centre is a genuine problem, which is worth weighing if you are thinking of hiring a car for a city stay. For the airport, the wine villages and Kourion, a booked car avoids both the parking and the winding-road driving.

When to come

• April–June — warm, green, and the sea is swimmable from late May.
• July–August — hot and humid in the city; the beach strip east of town is where to be.
• September–October — the best time. Warm sea, the wine festival in September, comfortable evenings.
• November–March — mild and quiet; this is when Limassol is most a normal city. Carnival falls in February or March.

FAQ

Which airport is closer to Limassol?

Paphos by five kilometres — 65 km against 70 km — but the drive from Larnaca is slightly faster on the motorway. Both are from €70, so choose on flight schedule and ticket price rather than distance.

Why does the transfer price to Limassol vary?

Because the city is 20 km long and priced by area. From Larnaca the eastern hotel strip is cheapest at €70 and the western suburbs €80; from Paphos it is reversed. You do not need to work out which zone you are in — the address resolves it.

Is Kourion worth the trip from Limassol?

Yes, and it is only fifteen minutes away on the Paphos road. Ninety minutes on site covers the theatre, the mosaics and the baths. There is no shade, so morning or late afternoon.

Can we visit the wine villages without a car?

Not easily — public transport barely reaches them. Either hire a car and accept the mountain roads, or book a car with a driver for the day; Limassol to the Troodos area is €40 each way for a sedan.
